Statement:  Jerry Lainoff / Artist Statement

For some time now, I have been absorbed in the complexities and directions of organicism in art and design throughout the 20th Century. This movement has undertaken many forms, from the evocative imagery of Miro’s figurative space, or Alexander Calder’s fluid abstract sculptures and drawings, to the technologically formed sculptural quality of the Eames chair.

In Modernism, we see distinct differences between hard edged geometric pictorial space and the softer, humanistic, amorphous imagery associated with organicism. My recent work tries to deal with merging organic imagery and harmonious structural systems. Juxtaposing varying symmetrical images while altering aspects of color, i.e. opacity and translucency, creates the visual tension necessary for modulating painterly space.

Born and raised in the suburbs of St. Louis, MO, I graduated with a B.F.A. in painting at Washington University, St. Louis. I moved to Boston, MA in 1974 and completed my M.F.A. at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1979.

In 1985, I was involved with the organizing and completion of the largest artist condominium project in the country; the Brickbottom Artists Studios in Somerville, MA, and have been a resident ever since.
